Entertaiment — a word that carries more than just amusement in its folds. It comes from the Latin intertenere, meaning to “hold inside.” Hence it has always been associated with hospitality. A clown at a child’s birthday party, a Broadway show, stadium rock music, your friends fighting over the last potato chip—all are forms of entertainment. Entertainment evolves as it moves across different media. What’s entertainment for one group may be considered work or cruelty to another. But in a world of increasingly consolidated content and globalization, entertainment has a hugely broad appeal.
