The Daily News is an American newspaper based in New York City. It was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson as the Illustrated Daily News. As of 2017, it was the ninth most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States, printing 200,000 copies a day.

Founded as the first successful tabloid in the United States, The Daily News became famous for its sensational coverage of crime and scandal. It also published lurid photographs and cartoons.

Its circulation remained high until the mid-20th century, when competition from the New York Post reduced its sales. In recent years, it has exhibited a more moderate-to-liberal bias.
