Entertaiment is about fun and laughter, but it can also be a serious thing. It often hits on the points that our brains were evolved to react deeply to, like social backstabbing and murders. These themes were important to our survival and a part of how we understood the world around us.
The word “entertain” derives from the Latin inter tenere, meaning holding inside; the Indo-European root ten is pronounced similar to the letter “T.” The fall 2011 issue of T E News, for example, was on Transformational Entertainment.
Entertainment can be done on any scale, from one-on-one interaction involving a personal choice of pre-recorded media; to a party with a themed menu and music adapted for the occasion; to performances designed for thousands; to even the global population.
